Everyone has heard about the Colonial Pipeline ransomware attack. Colonial was forced to shut down a pipeline supplying about 45% of the east coast, which triggered a run on gasoline that spiked prices to the highest levels in over six years.
Since they were unable to quickly identify all impacted systems, Colonial paid the DarkSide criminal gang a $4.4 million ransom. In the end, it took about six days to restart the pipeline’s flow of fuel. However, Colonial reports it will take months of restoration work to recover some business systems and that the incident will ultimately cost them tens of millions of dollars. Additionally, more than two weeks after the incident, they were still unable to bill customers.
The CEO stated, “We were perfectly happy having no one know who Colonial Pipeline was, and unfortunately that’s not the case anymore. Everybody in the world knows.”
With such large effects from a ransomware attack, what might happen to your operations if you could not move product for a week or bill customers for two weeks or more? And how might your reputation suffer in a situation like this?
